In March 2021, His Holiness Pope Tawadrous II, 118th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark of the Coptic Orthodox Church, ordained His Grace Bishop Joseph a General Bishop of Africa. The diocese serves four countries (Namibia – Zimbabwe – Botswana – Malawi).
His Holiness Pope Tawadrous II is the 118 successor of Saint Mark the Evangelist, one of the seventy Apostles of Jesus Christ, and the writer of the Gospel of St Mark. He was born in Libya three years after the birth of Christ to Jewish parents who later moved to Palestine. Lord Jesus Christ used to meet with His disciples at St Mark’s house in the upper room, where He celebrated the Passover with them.
In the same house of St Mark, the Apostles were also gathering when they were filled with the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. Thus, the house of Saint Mark is well known in all Apostolic Churches as the first church in the world.
